1565: The Eiroku Incident—The Assassination of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru

An army of over 10,000 led by Miyoshi Yoshitsugu, the Miyoshi Triumvirate, and Matsunaga Hisamichi surrounded the Nijō Palace in Kyoto and attacked shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru. Yoshiteru fought fiercely with his own sword, but was overwhelmed and killed. The unprecedented killing of a shogun by forces nominally beneath him became a stark symbol of the Muromachi shogunate's collapsing authority.

Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru Is Killed in the Eiroku Incident

Forces of the Miyoshi Triumvirate and their allies attacked the shogunal residence in Kyoto, and the thirteenth Muromachi shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru was killed after resisting.

Takeda Yoshinobu Is Confined at Tōkō-ji

Takeda Shingen confined his heir Yoshinobu at Tōkō-ji in Kōfu and punished Yoshinobu's guardian Obu Toramasa after an alleged plot was exposed. The Takeda succession and relations with the Imagawa were destabilized.
