INTERACTIVE BATTLE

First Battle of Kōnodai

October 1538 · Kōnodai

The Bōsō forces of Ashikaga Yoshiaki, Satomi Yoshitaka, and their allies fought Hōjō Ujitsuna's army at Kōnodai. The Hōjō won and Yoshiaki was killed.

Background

For the Hojo, who had secured Izu and Sagami, Musashi was the door to the Kanto plain, Edo Bay and the river routes. Ujitsuna took Edo Castle in 1524 and Kawagoe Castle in 1537, breaking up Uesugi strongholds and extending his forces and administration into northern Musashi and Shimosa. The confrontation at Konodai with Ashikaga Yoshiaki of the Oyumi kubo and Satomi Yoshitaka came as that advance reached Boso and Shimosa.

Outcome

The Hojo won and Ashikaga Yoshiaki of the Oyumi kubo was killed. Ujitsuna's domain is held to have spread beyond Izu and Sagami into Musashi, part of Suruga and part of Shimosa.

Historical significance

The victory displayed Hojo military power to the powers of Boso and Shimosa. Ujitsuna widened the basis of a network of branch castles with their own keepers: Kawagoe later fell to the Daidoji, Tamanawa to Hojo Tsunashige, and the Hachioji area to Hojo Ujiteru. Since keepers and dates changed by generation, Ujitsuna cannot be said to have completed the later arrangement of branch castles.
