Brother of Hōjō Ujimasa; adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin

Uesugi Kagetora

上杉景虎

Brother of Hōjō Ujimasa and adopted son of Uesugi Kenshin, also recorded as Hōjō Ujihide. After Kenshin's death in 1578, he contended for leadership with another adopted son, Uesugi Kagekatsu, resulting in the Otate Conflict. Ujimasa's support for Kagetora was not mere intervention in Echigo's internal strife but reflected the Hōjō's northern strategy. However, when Takeda Katsuyori supported Kagekatsu, it provoked renewed conflict between the Hōjō and Takeda.
