Maritime power of Shima and Oda/Toyotomi naval forces
九鬼嘉隆
A military commander who, based on maritime power in Shima, joined the Oda cause and led the naval forces from Ise Bay to Osaka Bay. He is said to have served Nobunaga through Takigawa Kazumasu, commanding ships at Nagashima and Kizu River mouth. After the first defeat at Kizu River mouth, Nobunaga ordered the construction of large-scale vessels; in 1578, Yoshitaka's fleet fought the Mōri navy. This dominance pressed the Ishiyama Honganji's maritime supply and became one condition leading to their departure in 1580. The maritime power of Ise and Shima was not governed by a single daimyo but by groups based on coastal areas, shore samurai, ship owners, and harbors; Yoshitaka mediated between Oda's military demands and regional ships, people, and ports.
