Sen no Rikyū

A Sakai merchant who served as tea master first to Oda Nobunaga and then to Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In tea gatherings under Hideyoshi's regime, court nobles, daimyo, merchants, and monks sat together, making visible the possession and display of tea utensils, master-retainer relationships, and urban wealth. Tea ceremony was not a pastime but a ritual space supporting regime operations through ceremony, gift exchange, audiences, and cultural authority. In 1591, he was punished by Hideyoshi, but the reason cannot be reduced to a single anecdote such as opposition to a wooden statue at Daitokuji Gate or to a golden tea room, or to clashing aesthetic sensibilities.
