Tsuruga

Port
Echizen Province
1467–1616 (throughout)

A key port on the Japan Sea side connecting the Kinai region to Hokuriku, it supported Asakura rule of Tsuruga in the Sengoku period. After Oda Nobunaga's 1570 Echizen invasion, rulers changed; through Hachiya Yoritsugu, Ōtani Yoshitsugu developed port functions and the castle town.

Editorial note

Medieval harbor areas and docking sites are difficult to determine due to changes in the Shōnō River course and coastline; the coordinate represents the river mouth area near the old Tsuruga harbor.
