The Iba Rebellion began when Rokkaku Takayori attempted to remove his increasingly powerful deputy Iba Sadataka. Iba's forces drove Takayori into Otowa Castle in Gamō District.

Hyakusai-ji burned during the Iba Rebellion that had begun the previous year. Akazawa Tomotsune aided Iba Sadataka, but shogunal mediation produced a settlement with Rokkaku Takayori and temporarily ended the conflict.
