Fifth-generation head of the Hōjō clan. Succeeding to leadership from Ujimasa in August 1580, under his father's guidance he advanced into eastern Shinano after defeating Takigawa Kazumasu in the former Takeda territories following the Honnō-ji Incident of 1582. He made peace with Tokugawa Ieyasu and gained Kōzuke, welcomed Ieyasu's daughter as his wife, and incorporated the power and territories of the Koga kubō, forming the Hōjō clan's largest domain. Negotiations with Toyotomi Hideyoshi broke down over the Numata domain and the matter of ascending to Kyoto, and in July 1590 he surrendered and was exiled to Mount Kōya. He was pardoned the following year and restored to daimyo status, but died that same year.
