Ōtani Yoshitsugu

大谷吉継

A close attendant to Toyotomi Hideyoshi who undertook magistrate duties, held Tsuruga as his domain, developed its port and logistics, and was dispatched to the Mutsu-Dewa suppression campaign and the Korean campaign. His court rank was Vice Minister of Justice. During Hideyoshi's period, his work involved Tsuruga's port and merchants, reorganization of lands and fiefs, land surveys and military administration in distant regions, and the role of persuading and coordinating with front-line commanders. Though not counted among the Five Magistrates in general accounts, he appears as a transmitter of documents issued by Hideyoshi and traveled alongside figures like Ishida Mitsunari on important matters. The later-period image of 'loyal friend to Mitsunari' and 'general devoted to friendship' derives from the Sekigahara period and should not be confused with his administrative and military duties during Hideyoshi's time. The name of his illness and the time of its onset are also limited in what can be determined from contemporary sources.
