- Morning, 15 September: Ii unit opens fire — As the mist thinned, the Matsudaira-Ii unit slipped past the vanguard Fukushima unit, advanced before the Ukita force and opened fire. Enraged by this breach of order, Fukushima Masanori loosed a volley at the Ukita force, and the battle began. The spot lies near the centre of the battlefield.
- Late morning, 15 September: Kobayakawa defects and the Western army breaks — Kobayakawa Hideaki changed sides and the battle turned at once in the Eastern army's favour. Eastern units pressed in after Ishida Mitsunari's head, and the fiercest fighting of the day followed. The Western army fought on but was beaten. The ground lies below Sasao-yama.
