A retainer of the Kodera of Harima who served Hideyoshi and was involved in the China campaign, Kyushu subjugation, and the Korean campaign. Known as Kanbe and Jōsui, he should not be understood through the later image of an omnipotent 'military strategist,' but rather through his role in negotiations with regional powers in Harima, domain management in Kyushu, and coordination of front-line reports with logistics. The epithet 'Two Kanbe' alongside Takenaka Shigetoki is a later biographical assessment and should not be understood to mean the two always worked as a unified team in strategy.
