Shikoku Campaign - Sengoku Shogun Map
Follow the 1585 Shikoku Campaign phase by phase on the map, with the commanders involved and the sources behind each step.
June to July 1585 Awa, Sanuki, Iyo and Tosa Provinces
Hashiba Hideyoshi sent armies into Shikoku on three fronts against Chosokabe Motochika. Motochika submitted, retained only Tosa, and Shikoku was reorganized under Hideyoshi's settlement.
Major events
- June 1585: Mori forces cross to Iyo — Mori forces led by Kobayakawa Takakage and Kikkawa Motonaga crossed to Iyo and attacked Chosokabe positions. They took Takao Castle, and Kono Michinao of Iyo submitted to Takakage. Neither the landing point nor the site of Takao Castle is identified in the sources used here. The map marks Yuzuki Castle, the Kono seat in Iyo, as a reference point for this front.
- June 1585: Hidenaga and Hidetsugu land in Awa — Hashiba Hidenaga and Hidetsugu landed in Awa and took Kizu and Ushiki castles.
- June 1585: Landing in Sanuki — Sengoku Hidehisa and Bito Tomonobu, attached to the Ukita and Kuroda forces, landed at Yashima and reduced castles in Sanuki, according to the Kagawa prefectural chronology. The list and order of the castles taken are not established in the sources used here.
- June to July 1585: The invading armies besiege Ichinomiya and Waki — The armies of Hidenaga and Hidetsugu joined Ukita forces from Sanuki and besieged Ichinomiya and Waki castles. 総兵力と各部隊の正確な進路は資料間の照合が十分でないため記さない。
- July 1585: Motochika accepts a settlement — Chosokabe Motochika accepted terms, provided a hostage and withdrew to Tosa. 和議の日は原資料の旧暦表記を西暦へ換算せず、月までとする。
背景
Motochika had expanded from Tosa across most of Shikoku. Hideyoshi mobilized the Mori and Ukita and sought to bring Shikoku into his political order.
結末
A settlement was reached in July. Motochika gave a hostage and withdrew to Tosa. Tosa remained with Motochika, while Sanuki, Iyo and Awa went to Sengoku Hidehisa, Kobayakawa Takakage and Hachisuka Iemasa.
歴史的な位置づけ
Shikoku moved from broad Chosokabe control to an order in which Hideyoshi allocated provinces among lords. The campaign also demonstrated his ability to mobilize powerful houses across regions.

- 豊臣秀長 （羽柴氏・Commander of the Awa army） — Landed in Awa and directed the attacks and sieges there.
- 宇喜多秀家 （宇喜多氏・Commander on the Sanuki front） — Advanced through Sanuki and joined the Awa army.
- 小早川隆景 （毛利氏・Commander on the Iyo front） — Led Mori forces across to Iyo and attacked Chosokabe positions.
- 長宗我部元親 （長宗我部氏・Commander-in-chief of the Chosokabe） — Resisted across Shikoku before accepting terms and withdrawing to Tosa.
- 仙石秀久 （仙石氏・Commander who landed in Sanuki） — Landed at Yashima, took castles in Sanuki, and received Sanuki after the campaign.
- 河野通直 （河野氏・Daimyo of Iyo） — Submitted to Kobayakawa Takakage after his crossing to Iyo.
- 豊臣秀次 （羽柴氏・Commander in the Awa army） — Joined Hidenaga in operations in Awa.
- 吉川元長 （毛利氏・Commander on the Iyo front） — Crossed to Iyo together with Kobayakawa Takakage.
- 長宗我部親忠 （長宗我部氏・Third son handed over as a hostage） — Handed over as a hostage when the truce was concluded.
- 黒田孝高 （羽柴氏・Commander on the Sanuki front） — Formed the Sanuki front together with the Ukita forces.
- 尾藤知宣 （羽柴氏・Commander who landed in Sanuki） — Landed at Yashima together with Sengoku Hidehisa.
