1576: The Founding of Azuchi Castle and the Battle of Tennōji
Nobunaga began construction of the magnificent Azuchi Castle on Mount Azuchi in Ōmi, intended as his new base for unifying the realm. In Settsu, however, the Hongan-ji forces, resupplied by the Mōri, rallied, and Nobunaga personally led troops to victory at the Battle of Tennōji in May, though he was wounded by gunfire. Around the same time, the Mōri navy defeated the Oda fleet at the Battle of Kizugawaguchi, securing a supply route to Hongan-ji, so the long Ishiyama campaign continued to see fortunes swing both ways.

Shibata Katsuie issued a free-market ordinance at Kitanoshō to encourage commerce in the castle town and consolidate his rule in Echizen.
Oda Nobunaga developed a new castle on Mount Azuchi on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa and moved his headquarters there from Gifu.
A Mōri and Murakami naval convoy carrying provisions to Ishiyama Hongan-ji defeated the Oda fleet at the mouth of the Kizu River and kept the maritime supply route open. After the defeat, Nobunaga ordered Kuki Yoshitaka and others to build large warships.
