Hosokawa Masamoto

Eastern leader Hosokawa Katsumoto died and Hosokawa Masamoto succeeded him.

The core Hosokawa and Yamana houses made peace, while Ōuchi and Hatakeyama forces continued fighting.

Hosokawa Masamoto issued the Bunki Prohibitory Articles in the intercalary sixth month of 1501. Created as he announced the succession of his adopted son Sōmeimaru, the code was primarily intended to control the Hosokawa retainers.

Hosokawa Masamoto's retainer Akazawa Tomotsune invaded Yamato, defeated Tsutsui Junsei and his allies, and burned Hokke-ji and Saidai-ji. The campaign placed severe pressure on Yamato's temple estates and local warrior groups.

Acting on Hosokawa Masamoto's orders, Akazawa Tomotsune campaigned through Kawachi from the first through the second month, defeated both Hatakeyama Hisanobu's and Yoshihide's factions, and forced them to withdraw into Yamato.
