1584: The Battle of Komaki-Nagakute

Hashiba Hideyoshi's army and the allied forces of Tokugawa Ieyasu and Oda Nobukatsu confronted one another mainly in Owari Province, beginning a campaign that lasted about eight months.

Oda Nobukatsu put three of his own senior retainers to death on the charge that they had been in contact with Hashiba Hideyoshi. The killings amounted to a declaration of war on Hideyoshi, and Nobukatsu joined with Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Tokugawa Ieyasu pitched camp on Komakiyama while Hashiba Hideyoshi took position at Gakuden, and the two armies faced each other. The National Archives of Japan puts the Nobukatsu–Ieyasu force at about seventeen thousand men and Hideyoshi’s at one hundred thousand (sixty thousand by another account).

Tokugawa Ieyasu's army defeated a detached Hashiba force at Nagakute, where Ikeda Tsuneoki and Mori Nagayoshi were killed.

Takigawa Kazumasu entered Kanie Castle from the sea with the Kuki fleet and seized it by winning over the retainer left in charge of the castle. The allied army of Oda Nobukatsu and Tokugawa Ieyasu counterattacked and retook it after a siege of two weeks.

Sassa Narimasa of Etchū attacked Suemori Castle in Noto and Maeda Toshiie drove him off. The castle was held by Toshiie’s retainer Okumura Nagatomi, and Ishikawa Prefecture notes that this victory is said to be why the Maeda came to hold Kaga at a million koku.
