Sengoku daimyo of Tosa

Chōsokabe Motochika

A Sengoku daimyo based in Tosa who expanded his power across most of Shikoku. Kochi Prefecture's explanation describes how Motochika, after nearly unifying Tosa and Shikoku, faced Hideyoshi's invasion, surrendered, and was confirmed in possession of only Tosa Province. In June 1585, the Hashiba forces advanced from three directions: Mōri forces toward Iyo, Toyotomi Hidenaga and Toyotomi Hidetsugu forces toward Awa, and Ukita and Kuroda forces toward Sanuki. On July 25, Motochika withdrew to Tosa, offering his third son as hostage. After surrender, he reestablished relations through influential Toyotomi figures such as sending letters of thanks for Hideyoshi's pardon to one such official. The timing of negotiation breakdown and details of each side's demands cannot be confirmed in public records.
